What is a user agent string?

The user agent string is automatically sent along when visiting a website. There is certain data that is stored in the user agent string, such as the browser type (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer), the version number of the browser and also the operating system.

A user agent parser is software script that reads these variables from the user agent string and divides them into the correct categories: browser type, browser version, operating system.
